So I’ve realized that during the swing scene i was lowkey afraid. I was scared that something bad was going to happen when TJ started pushing Cyrus on the swing. I was thinking that Cyrus was gonna get hurt. I was wondering why I would think this and then I remembered about the scene when Cyrus tried to learn skateboarding for Jonah. Jonah left Cyrus to go ahead on his own. Cyrus was blinded by his crush and he ended up getting hurt (hmm metaphor much?). Now Jonah didn’t know this was going to happen but it is evident that he probably could’ve prepared him more or done it at a pace that Cyrus was more comfortable with. Then TJ’s encounter with Cyrus on the swings starts in a similar fashion with Cyrus putting himself down. Jonah had tried to encourage Cyrus but was unsuccessful while TJ puts himself on Cyrus’ level and shows his vulnerability as well. He also distracts Cyrus to focus on something else (swinging). In both situations, Cyrus expresses his concern or fear over the activity in question. TJ then starts pushing Cyrus out of his comfort zone to show him it’s not bad and is actually fun. This is what Jonah was trying to do as well but here TJ actually stays with him the whole time likely to make sure nothing bad happens. Cyrus even then expresses that he was actually having fun which is why TJ continues to push him, something I didn’t really realize when I first saw the scene. Even when Buffy sees them and TJ wants to leave he slows down Cyrus before going. Jonah and Cyrus’s scene was focused on Cyrus impressing him while TJ and Cyrus’s scene was more about their bond as equals.
